Bodegas y Vinedos Maurodos

2010 is a vintage of very high quality and exceptional balance. The grapes were very concentrated with lower yields than 2009 due to spring frosts. There was a long, cold and rainy winter giving good water reserves to survive the summer heat. Spring brought unexpected and late frost that reduced fruit set. September offered cool nighttime temperatures which preserved natural acidity and mature tannins. Fruit came into the winery very clean and healthy due to sunny and dry weather at harvest. The grapes are harvested by hand with a selection of grapes in the vineyard. The wine is fermented in temperature controlled, conical, stainless steel tanks which allow for caps to naturally be broken very softly during pump overs. The wine was aged for 12 months in second and third fill French and American oak barrels, which had previously been used for the maturation of San Roman. Bottled unfiltered in March 2012.

Wine Advocate

The 2010 Prima has a lifted nose of raspberry and wild strawberry, although there is a very slight acetic nose that just disturbs the aromatics. The palate has a slightly pinched entry with firm, robust tannins, a core of sweet, mocha-tinged fruit and a simple agreeable finish that is slightly attenuated. I feel that the 2011 will turn out to be the better wine. Drink now.

Score: 88. —Neal Martin, April 2013.
