Domaine Giraud

Lovely blood-red colour with crimson edges. Its powerful nose is reminiscent of basalt, tobacco leaf with cooked fruit notes and juicy prunes. Powerful structured palate, rich and rounded with flavours of fresh strawberry compote, raspberries, cherries tinged with thyme, wild juniper and violet rockrose.

Wine Spectator

Solid, with mulled plum, blackberry and fig fruit all woven together and backed by fruitcake, melted black licorice and espresso hints. A streak of apple wood keeps the finish going, and there's enough reticent fruit here to merit cellaring, as this should stretch out a bit more. Drink now through 2021. 220 cases made.

Score: 92. —James Molesworth, October 15, 2010.

Wine Advocate

Even better is their 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Grenaches de Pierre, one of a handful of wines made in 2008 that should turn out to be outstanding. A brilliant effort in a decent but uninspiring vintage, it possesses plenty of body and concentration as well as loads of sweet black cherry fruit intermixed with notions of licorice, camphor, and flowers. It should be at its finest between 2010 and 2016.

Score: 90-92. —Robert Parker, October 2009.
