Helmut Hexamer

Sensational new discovery on the upper Nahe, a young vintner doing everything right; handcrafted fruit-driven wines of terroir. Anti-varietal in the best sense, the same way that Condrieu isn't merely viognier; the best from the Rheingrafenberg are wines of deep site-character as rendered by riesling. Splendidly mineral wines into which fruit of great charm is interwoven. Fresh, with exceptional purity.

Wine Advocate

One scarcely need add the qualification "relative to the vintage" in declaring Hexamer's 2011 Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Quarzit another rendition of its namesake that features high residual sugar balanced against high acidity, but (as I noted in my Issue 198 report) the sugar is being gradually dialed back a bit in this cuvee and at 40 grams/liter nicely supports succulently ripe pear, apple, quince and pink grapefruit, wreathed in elderflower, heliotrope and orange blossom, all of which persist on a finish that's almost too next-sip compelling to be prolonged (unless you're a patient wine critic with a stopwatch). Look for at least a decade of satisfaction from this fine value.

Score: 90. —David Schildknecht, February 2013.
