Brick House

The wines of the Boulder Block are about power; harnessing the heat of the earth with the light of the sun. Boulder Block is often our last block to be harvested and one often processed "whole cluster"-- allowing both grapes and stems a role in natural yeast fermentation. This wine sees more new French oak cooperage than our other reserve wines. The result is a wine of substantial girth and distinctive aromatic character. The Boulder Block benefits greatly from four to six years in cool cellar.

Wine Advocate

Tunnell's 2010 Pinot Noir Boulder Block - as its name suggests - originates in the one place on Tunnel's farm where basalt rock comes to the surface, in circumstances that prompt late harvest and consequently usually a choice to retain a high percentage of stems - since they've had time to thoroughly lignify - in the ferment. Fresh dark cherry and purple plum infused with mint, ginger, and citrus oils make for an attention-getting nose and flatteringly inform a silken-textured yet persistently vivacious palate. A faint hint of caramel offers pleasing counterpoint and a lick of salt welcomes salivary stimulation in a long finish otherwise characterized by pungency, cut, and clarity. This should be well worth following for the better part of a decade.

Score: 91. —David Schildknecht, August 2012.

Wine Spectator

Light-footed, with orange peel and mineral accents to the light strawberry and spice flavors. Lingers delicately. Drink now through 2015. 400 cases made.

Score: 90. —Harvey Steiman, February 28, 2013.
