Château La Fleur Petrus

One of the greatest vintages of the last 60 years, and already a benchmark for its power and natural concentration. Located on the eastern side of the plateau of Pomerol between Lafleur and Pétrus (hence the name), La Fleur-Pétrus is ideally situated. Acquired by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, in 1994 a 10 acre block originally belonging to Château Le Gay and spreading over a wonderful hillock facing Château Lafleur was added, bringing the vineyard size to 35 acres. Planted on deep gravel that lends elegance and distinction to the wine, the vineyards are planted 80% to Merlot and 20% to Cabernet Franc, including the addition of old Cabernet Franc from the new vineyard parcel.

Wine Spectator

Densely packed and rather backward, displaying charcoal and apple wood notes in front of the core of dense roasted fig, macerated plum and steeped cherry fruit. The long finish is well-studded with toasted spice and tobacco hints. Terrific underlying grip for the cellar. Best from 2014 through 2030. 4,300 cases made.

Score: 97. —James Molesworth, March 31, 2012.

Wine Advocate

Even with considerable youthful characteristics, this stunning, open-knit 2009 is quite approachable. This fabled terroir sandwiched between Petrus and Lafleur (hence the name) generally produces one of the more elegantly-styled Pomerols, but in 2009 it offers an extra dimension of flavor intensity as well as more texture and concentration. It reveals a super-seductive perfume of mocha, loamy soil, herbs, black cherries and black currants, truffles and licorice, full body and velvety tannins. The overall impression is one of intensity, power, glycerin and richness as well as undeniable elegance and laser-like focus. This 2009 can be drunk now or cellared for another 25-30+ years.

Score: 97. —Robert Parker, February 2012.

Wine Enthusiast

Just across the road from Pétrus, la Fleur-Pétrus shares some of the same intensity. There is great fruit here, rounded and powerful with the ripest character. It is open, generous, ready to drink. The tannins lead into the purest acidity, letting the fruit sing.

Score: 96. —Roger Voss, February 01, 2012.
