Château Les Carmes Haut Brion

2006 was characterised by record-breaking sunny weather in the beginning of September, which brought the ripeness of the fruit to perfection, and enabled an exceptional harvest. The Merlot was of incredible intensity, surpassing the already unreal 2005. Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon were subtle and intensely aromatic. Thanks to the small scale of our vineyard, and to its location, we harvested early, an important advantage as it allowed us to finish harvesting just before the rains which began on September 20th. The grapes, especially clean and ripe, attained new records of phenolic ripeness. For properties like ours with large proportions of Merlot and early harvest, 2006 was a great success. It gave us a wine of great elegance, but also with a tannic structure which will provide long aging. This wine also presents a complex range of aromas (black cherry, raspberry, spices, cedar…) so seductive that it will easily rival our 2005.

Wine Enthusiast

Barrel sample. Vibrantly fruity wine that shows freshness. It has lift, fresh blackcurrants, layers of acidity, while the tannins hide in the background.

Score: 90-92. —Roger Voss, December 31, 2009.

Wine Advocate

Another beautiful example of minerality, finesse, elegance, and complexity, this earthy, spicy 2006 exhibits sweet raspberry and red currant fruit accompanied by hints of barbecue smoke and tobacco leaf. Medium-bodied, pure, and not terribly powerful, it is built around delicacy and purity. Give it 2-4 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 15 years.

Score: 90. —Robert Parker, February 2009.

Wine Spectator

Displays floral and raspberry aromas, with wet stone. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Stylish. Very well-made. Best after 2011.

Score: 90. —James Suckling, March 31, 2009.
