Rocca di Frassinello

Intense ruby red, soft, silky with lots of floral flavors (typical of Sangiovese), nice hints of red berries and cherries and elegant notes of vanilla and milk chocolate. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a round, medium finish. It pairs well with all red meat dishes and mature cheeses.

Wine Advocate

The 2007 Rocca di Frassinello (60% Sangioveto, 20% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) flows from the glass with layers of minerals, dark red blackberries, blueberry jam, spices and sweet French oak, all of which come together on a soft, opulent frame. The sumptuous personality follows through to a long finish where the tannins turn just a touch dry. Ideally, the wine should be opened at least 30 minutes in advance to allow for the bouquet to find its focus. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022.

Score: 90. —Antonio Galloni, October 2010.

Wine Enthusiast

Here's a mature red wine from Maremma, Tuscany with ripe notes of cherry, chocolate, prune and black plum followed by exotic spice and spicy mesquite flavors. The wine is sweet, round and slightly jammy in the mouth but washes over the palate with generosity and intensity.

Score: 90. —Monica Larner, March 01, 2010.

Wine Spectator

Raisiny, with hints of prune and blackberry on the nose. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a medium chewy finish. A little overdone, but there's interesting character. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Best after 2010. 6,000 cases made.

Score: 90. —James Suckling, October 31, 2009.
