Cambria
Cambria lies in the heart of the Santa Maria Bench in northern Santa Barbara County. This area was originally known as "tepuztli" by the native Chumash Indians, later Spanish settlers translated the word as Tepusquet. Part of an 1838 Mexican land grant, "Rancho Tepusquet" was home to cattle and row crops throughout the 1800s. Cambria is part of the original Tepusquet Vineyard planted in 1971 and 1972 on the Santa Maria Bench. It quickly earned a reputation for site-specific, character-laden Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Early clients for grapes included some of California's finest wineries. Recognizing the outstanding quality of the fruit, the Jackson family purchased Tepusquet in 1986 and renamed it Cambria, the Roman word for Wales, in honor of their family heritage. Construction of the winery was completed in 1990 and an additional barrel aging facility was added in 1995. The mountains on the Santa Maria Bench run east to west, providing a south-facing slope for vineyards and allowing cool, fog-laden air from the Pacific Ocean to favorably affect the valley's climate. This critical maritime influence keeps evening temperatures cool and lengthens the growing season for the grapes. Because of the cool evenings, the fruit retains a crisp acidity that balances and complements its intense, tropical fruit characters. The 1400-acre estate vineyard is currently planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and small amounts of Barbera, Pinot Gris, Sangiovese and Viognier. Production includes the signature Katherine's Chardonnay (which will celebrate its tenth anniversary with the 1999 vintage), Julia's Pinot Noir, Tepusquet Vineyard Syrah and Sangiovese. Stylistically, all of the wines are noteworthy for their opulent fruit and notable complexity.
