The Cave de Rasteau winery was established in 1925 and is well known for the quality of its wines. They recently opened a new cellar which perfectly matches its setting and the great personality of its wines. Like them, it is both authentic and modern, powerful and elegant, varied and congenial. The living roof, solar panels, Vaison stone and partly buried building backing onto terraced vineyards are designed to offer an inviting modern setting for discovering Rasteau wines. Rasteau covers an area of 1880 hectares (4,645 acres) with 1240 devoted to vineyards. This truely is a large operation. It has a Mediterranean climate and the exposure of the vineyards is excellent: 70% of them are on south-facing hillsides swept by the Mistral; the soils are different types of clayey limestone, some of them covered with smooth stones like the one pictured here. The diversity of soils and grape varieties explains why Rasteau wines have such complexity in their aromas and flavors. The average age of the vines is 40 years, though some plots are over 80 years old: grapes from the old vines are used for Rasteau Vin Doux Naturel and today's featured wine, the Cotes du Rhone Villages.
