 Vina Montes was born in 1987 when four partners, each with experience in the Chilean wine business, joined together to create something different. Up until then, most Chilean wineries produced wine for local consumption and really did not consider exporting wines to other countries. These four visionaries, though, knew that the vines in Chile certainly had the grapes to create wines of stature for the international market. Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon 1987 became the first ever premium Chilean export wine and it opened for Montes and for Chile, a path other wineries quickly followed. Other wines followed in the Montes Alpha range: a Chardonnay, Merlot and a Syrah. Montes Classic wines are true ambassadors, representing the outstanding value Chile can offer for everyday drinking. Sourced from vineyards with yields greater than those producing their Alpha wines, the vineyard husbandry is nonetheless just as professional. Cultivation is virtually organic, and grapes are hand-picked and transported to the winery with the utmost care, to keep bunch damage to an absolute minimum. Today's feature is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot for increased softness and complexity, both sourced from the well known Colchagua Valley. The wine has been aged for six months in new and used French oak. |
