Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc Viognier 2011
Central Valley, California

"This delicious 65,000-case blend of 79% Chenin Blanc and 21% Viognier was aged in stainless steel. (I never knew there was this much Chenin Blanc grown in California!) It exhibits a big, sweet nose of ripe melons, white peaches and apricots as well as crisp acids and a crunchy, succulent mouthfeel. The result is a delightful white wine that could be served as an aperitif or with an assortment of sushi, sashimi or baked fish. Enjoy it over the next year."

The harvest and wine making procedures at Pine Ridge are time consuming, costly, and absolutely necessary in order to craft world-class wines. Some of these procedures are: NIGHT HARVESTING by hand, to ensure that the grapes (and the grape pickers) don't suffer the ill affects of daytime harvest heat, CRUSH PROOF TRANSPORTATION, via their small capacity bins which deliver 25 pounds of undamaged grapes, CLUSTER SORTING of every bin to eliminate matter other than grapes, MOG as it's known in sorting circles, and BERRY SORTING, aka Jack Sorting, a tedious process of inspecting individual berries after destemming to eliminate small bits of leaf and stem. Less than a handful (no pun intended) of Napa Valley wineries employ the tedious, costly and time consuming task of sorting individual berries after destemming. These painstaking measures - combined with stellar estate vineyards, vineyard managers dedicated to each individual vineyard and sustainable farming practices - ensures that every bottle of Pine Ridge wine showcases the true characteristics of each varietal and the terroir in which it was grown. In the early 1990s, Pine Ridge crafted this unusual and delectable blend as an experimental bottling, creating one of their most beloved and popular wines. This unique marriage of two varietals that would never share the same bottle in their native France unites the crisp, honeyed fruit of Chenin Blanc with the plush body, light floral aromas and juicy stone fruit notes of Viognier, for a wine that is both sophisticated and easy to enjoy.
