 Mustiguillo was created to give a place and prominence to the unheralded varietal Bobal. Owner/winemaker Toni Sarrion believes strongly that this grape, when cropped low and harvested later can produce wines that can rival some of the greatest wines of Northern Spain. As such, many of the old vines of the property have been kept (some as old as 90 years old) and new vines of Bobal planted as well. Mustiguillo's mission is to protect this indigenous varietal and nurture it into what has become, according to many experts, one of Spain's most fascinating wines. In September of 2010, Bodegas Mustiguillo became Valencia's first winery with the 'Vino de Pago' designation - and one of only eleven in the entire country. The 2008 Mestis is composed of 50% Bobal with the balance Tempranillo, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Mestis is the Valencian term for mixed ancestry. It was naturally fermented and aged for 10 months in French oak. |
