"The 2009 Avante is 100% Mencia sourced from multiple vineyards with an average age of 43 years. The wine was aged in both stainless steel (30%) and French oak (70%) for 5 months. It offers up notes of earthy minerals, a hint of balsamic, black cherries, and violets leading to a nicely proportioned, sweetly fruited, savory red with excellent volume and length. It is an outstanding value for drinking over the next 4-5 years. "

 Owed by Jorge Ordonez and the Gil family the Bodegas Triton winery is located in the village of Villanueva de Campean near Zamora in the historic area known as de la Tierra del Vino, The Land of Wine. This designation pre dates the current designation of the nearby appellation of Toro. The region known as de la Tierra del Vino should have been included in the D.O. Toro but was forgotten when the boundaries were drawn. This region was chosen for this winery because of the unique soils, similar to those found within the D. O. Toro. Today's feature is made with the indigenous and up and coming varietal Mencia. After fermentation 70% of the wine is aged for 4 months in second year French barrels and 30% is aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve fruit. In Roman mythology Triton's stallions represented the waves upon the waters he ruled. Inspired by a stone carving of these horses, Avante's label pays homage to the wild rivers that carved their paths into the rugged mountains of northern Spain.
