Torres Ibericos Crianza 2009
Rioja, Spain

"(100% Tempranillo): Bright ruby-red. Cherry, redcurrant, pipe tobacco and smoky oak on the nose. Red berry flavors gain depth and power with air, picking up notes of licorice and bitter chocolate. Firm tannins add grip to a finish with very good energy and clinging spiciness."

When Bodegas Torres was founded in 1870, the family owned vineyards in the Penedes region of Spain. El Penedes was always the family home and birthplace. From the beginnings of the winery, Jaime Torres concentrated his efforts on the export of wines, especially to the city of Havana, Cuba. As a result of the growth of the family winery, the project for exporting wines from La Rioja was eventually abandoned. However, in 2005, the Torres family decided to return to La Rioja, but this time not only as exporters but also as winemakers. Thus, the modern winery in the town of Labastida was constructed, with a clear goal, to produce wines of high quality that reflected the personality of the region. The village of Labastida is in La Rioja Alavesa and it may be said that its very stones breathe history. It is situated at over 4,000 feet above sea level. Today's feature, Ibericos, receives its name from the Iberian Peninsula, and specifically from the mountain system that borders the region of La Rioja. Ibericos is made with 100% Tempranillo grapes, the most typical varietal of the red wines of La Rioja. To produce this wine, the family selects the best grapes to make an elegant wine that is aged in both American and French oak barrels for 12 months followed by 6 months in the bottle.
