 The culture of winemaking in the Bierzo area of northwest Spain goes back to the Greeks and Phoenicians. With many ancient vineyards over 100 years old, this area has a unique microclimate as it is protected on one side by mountains and on the other by the plateau of Castilla y Leon. This all makes for a longer growing season for the principal red wine grape of the region: Mencia. This grape produces wines that are red in color with purple hints and tend to be very aromatic and fruit forward. Vinos De Arganza was transformed into a family business in 2000 when Victor Robla and his wife Angeles Varela, a descendant of old nobility in the region, purchased the winery and vineyards. Their aim is to bring innovative systems to the winemaking process and to pass this new tradition down to their children. Thus far, they have had great success on both counts. And holding prices to this level for a wine of this quality is indeed a success all by itself! |
