Urban Ribera del Duero 2009
Ribera del Duero, Spain
"The 2009 Urban Ribera, from what looks to be a great vintage, was aged in French oak for 4 months. Deep purple in color with an inviting perfume of violets, Asian spices, black cherry, and blackberry, on the palate it is layered, plush, and intense. While likely to evolve for 1-2 years, this outstanding value can be enjoyed now and over the next 5-6 years. "

Bodegas Hnos. San Juan Lopez, now Bodegas y Vinedos O.Fournier, was originally founded by the San Juan family from Aranda de Duero (Burgos). The winery was built in 1979, a few years ahead of the creation of the Denominacion de Origen Ribera de Duero. The first vines at the vineyard were planted in 1946. In September 2002, Bodegas y Vinedos O.Fournier Group purchased the winery and vineyards in order to continue with their international development of fine wines from four different regions and their goal to become one of the leading wineries in Ribera de Duero. The main asset of the winery is its vineyard. The estate has 260 total acres of which 148 are planted with vines. The main varietal is Tinta del País (Tempranillo). This old vineyard allows Fournier to obtain high quality grapes for all three of the wines produced here. Today's entry level wine from this operation is fermented in stainless steel and then spends 3 months in French oak. |
