 Farming is in Butch and Jerry Milbrandt's blood. Their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles all made their living working the land. They came to Eastern Washington as young children and have always called it home. When they planted their first vines in 1997 they were entering uncharted territory. Today, they farm 12 distinct estate vineyard sites totaling nearly 2000 acres. Their grapes are purchased by some of the most prestigious wineries in the state. Their own winery, launched in 2005, produces highly-individualistic wines from their estate and neighboring vineyards. Jim McFerran, one of the foremost viticulturists in Washington, joined them back in 1997 to help with the intricacies of planting. They were very careful about matching the right variety to the right site. The goal was to be the best growers in the state. From the start, demand for their grapes was immediate and overwhelming. As farmers, they feel that there is nothing more satisfying than controlling the quality and style of your product from start to finish. In June of 2007, under the direction of veteran winemaker Gordon Hill, they launched the Milbrandt Vineyards label. The Traditions wines blend fruit from Milbrandt estate and neighboring vineyards throughout Eastern Washington's Columbia Valley. |
