Domaine St. Gayan Cotes du Rhone Villages Rasteau 2009
Rhone, France
"A dark and grippy red, with lots of ganache and espresso leading the way, while mulled plum, fig paste and hoisin sauce notes fill in behind. The finish is tarry but fresh, with solid grip that's more like 2010 than 2009. Drink now through 2018."

"An excellent estate dedicated to making robustly styled, natural wines that are always among the best of the traditional heavyweights of Gigondas." -Robert Parker, Wines of the Rhone Valley. Domaine Saint Gayan is a small estate located at the foot of the spectacular Dentelles de Montmirail in the Gigondas appellation. One of the great estates of the Southern Rhone, the owners, Jean-Pierre Meffre and his wife Martine produce wines of enormous power and concentration. With 1/3 of the vines being about 100 years old and the yields consequently low, the Gigondas has all the complexity and intensity of flavor one can expect from the Rhone. In a good vintage, the Rasteau, Gigondas, and Chateauneuf du Pape will easily age for at least 15 years in bottle. The Cotes du Rhone, mainly from old vines in the neighbouring village of Sablet, one of the richest and most complex of the appellation, must certainly represent the best value available from the area. Today's feature is their Rasteau Cotes-du-Rhone Villages. Vinification follows traditional methods: 50% of the grapes are crushed, 50% fermented whole-berry. The wine is kept two years in tank and one year in cask before bottling.
