Tilenus Envejecido En Roble Bierzo 2007
Bierzo, Spain
"The 2007 Envejecido en Roble exhibits a perfume of toasty oak, Asian spices, lilacs, and black raspberry. In the glass it displays layers of spicy fruit, a hint of minerality, and a sense of elegance. Nicely proportioned and lengthy, it is likely to evolve for 1-2 years and offer prime drinking from 2013 to 2022. "

This project started in 1999, when the Frias family decided to restore an old dairy located in the hamlet of Dehesas to house their Bodegas Estefania winemaking facilities. The philosophy was, from the beginning, a small winery capable of producing wines with varietal character (like the grape Mencia used in today's feature). They also wanted to convey the beauty and complexity of a land like Bierzo. This was all achieved with a number of growers by setting quality parameters. While using purchased grapes in the beginning they began a slow process of purchasing those vineyards that met their stringent qualifications. In Roman times, about 25 B.C. the Roman Empire in Iberia exploited this area for it's gold deposits and also for it's wine. The Romans planted vineyards and began to develop the techniques that were eventually used in other parts of Europe. The Romans brought with them their culture and customs including their religion. In this part of the world there was a primitive god called "Teleno" (god of war). The Roman equivalent was "Mars", so the result of this coexistence was "Mars Tilenus". The evocative memories of this golden age is recorded on their labels with a Roman coin that was found in one of the vineyards. And the name that gives life to their wine: Tilenus. Today's feature is made with 100% Mencia. It is fermented in stainless steel tanks and then spends about 10 months in a combination of French and American oak before bottling. |
