This offering, from very old vines and aged completely in concrete, is a naked, unadulterated, unmanipulated effort with great minerality (from the chalky, limestone soils) and an intensity and richness (from the old vines) that are normally found in $50+ wines. As I told Eric Solomon, at these ridiculously low prices, consumers will never suspect the wines are at this level of quality. This outstanding 2011 offers loads of kirsch, raspberry, licorice, garrigue and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied and dense, it is best consumed over the next 2-3 years. A killer value, it is a custom cuvee made for Eric Solomon by proprietor Nuria Altes."

 Herencia Altes is a project a long time in the making. For generations Nuria Altes' family have been grape growers with vineyards dispersed around the village of Batea in the Terra Alta region of Spain. Now, she has decided to give these grapes their own personality in the form of her hand-crated wines. While Terra Alta is not yet a well known region (it is tucked away in the south eastern corner of Catalonia) it is one of the largest appellations in terms of vineyards. With plenty of old Garnatxa bush vines, Nuria feels that it is one of the best regions in terms of quality and authenticity. Most of the grapes from Batea, Nuria's home town, are sold to cooperatives outside the region. Herencia Altes is her dream to put Terra Alta on the map and show the true quality of these wonderful old vines. Today's feature, their Garnatxa (Grenache) Negra is 100% Grenache from a range of those bush vines, some very old and others younger, to achieve complexity and balance. Of utmost importance was picking with a good level of ripeness but avoiding excess alcohol. |
