The history of Chateau Beaucastel and the Perrin Family goes all the way back to 1549 when Pierre de Beaucastel bought the original plot of land and started growing grapes. Over the years there were a number of owners. In 1909 Pierre Tramier bought the property and Beaucastel then passed to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, a scientist who considerably increased the vineyard holdings. His efforts were continued by Jacques Perrin until 1978. Today the torch is carried by Jean Pierre and Francois, sons of Jacques. The fifth generation of Perrins, Marc, Pierre, Thomas and Matthieu, are already learning how to make great wines here from Jean Pierre and Francois who now run the operation. Famille Perrin is pictured here and aspires to establish its reputation specializing in vineyard-designated communal wines from the Southern Rhone. And as the company's head vineyard scout, Pierre Perrin must unearth diamonds in the rough. His job is to add to their growing portfolio of small, quality wine estates in France's Southern Rhone Valley. Today's feature is their Vinsobres les Cornuds. This wine is produced by the Perrin family, using the same viticultural and wine-making techniques used at Chateau de Beaucastel. The Vinsobres les Cornuds comes from the Perrin family vineyards at Domaine de la Bicarell and from the Julien estate that lies next to the small village of Cornuds, on the northern side of the Vinsobres appellation. This vineyard consists of a single block that runs over some magnificent sloped and terraced hillsides facing southwest at an average height of 300 meters above sea level. 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache, the wine is made at the Perrin & Fils winery in Vinsobres. It is matured 80% in stainless steel and 20% in two year old barrels, and is aged an additional 6 months in bottle before it is shipped.
