Kaiken is a relatively new label and the first Argentine venture of Aurelio Montes, the respected wine maker of the Chilean Vina Montes. Kaiken is a Mapuche Indian word for a Patagonian goose that, appropriately, ranges on both side of the Andes. It was the wines of Argentina, in particular Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, that attracted Montes into that country. He imposed upon the operation, right from the start in 2001, the task of acquiring for Kaiken only the best grapes produced in the area. He and his staff went through all the best grape producing estates, finally deciding on the exceptional quality of the "First Zone" (Maipu, Cruz de Piedra, Ugarteche, Agrelo) as well as from Valle de Uco. Along with a very limited selection of the best producers (they source all the grapes from local growers), they meticulously supervise each step and work in the vineyards from start to finish each growing season, observing each little detail. This is all done to attain the full potential from the best fruit. The grapes for the Malbec are hand harvested from 15 year old vines located in the First zone of Mendoza, a small portion of grapes from the Uco Valley are used to enhance the wine’s complexity and structure. This wine consists of 98% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. After fermentation 80% of the wine was aged in French oak barrels for 12 months.
