Bodegas y Vinedos O. Fournier B Crux 2008
Mendoza, Argentina
"The 2008 B Crux is composed of 60% Tempranillo, 30% Malbec, and 10% Merlot aged for 12 months in 50% new French and American oak and bottled without filtration. Expressive aromas of wood smoke, violets, mineral, black cherry, and blackberry inform the nose of a layered, ripe, concentrated wine with impeccable balance and length. It is likely to evolve for 1-2 years but can be approached now."

Bodega y Vinedos O. Fournier's mission is to become one of the most outstanding high-quality wineries in Argentina. One of the main reasons they can achieve this is the location of their vineyards and their outside supplier's vineyards in the La Consulta region which lies in the well-known Uco Valley. All of these vineyards are at an elevation of approximately 3,950 ft. above sea level. At this altitude, there is a significant fluctuation between daytime and night-time temperatures. This variance particularly favors the production of wines with an excellent color and suitable for long ageing in oak barrels. In their quest for the best quality fruit to be found they analyzed over 170 estates and selected the best 12 with whom they entered into long term contracts. Although they have quite a few acres of older vines on their own estate they want to produce a good volume so need these outside sources while their own new vineyard plantings reach the minimum age they feel they need to produce high quality grapes, namely 10 to 15 years old. To ensure these purchased grapes are of the highest quality, the suppliers co-operate closely with Fournier in vine and grape management, in particular by limiting the use of fertilizers, treatments and irrigation; green harvesting; and harvesting the grapes manually with the company's own workers. Today's feature is a blend of 60% Tempranillo, 30% Malbec and 10% Merlot which spends 12 months in 50% new and 50% used oak barrels. |
