Today's feature is from one of many wineries operated by the eclectic Stephan von Neipperg one of the "Right Bank's" most controversial figures. Bruce Schoenfeld's Wine Spectator article on Neipperg says that he wears very loud and eccentric clothing and is full of sarcasm and dry wit. He told Schoenfeld that of the vintages of Canon-La Gaffeliere that preceded his arrival in Bordeaux in 1985, he confides, "They're so good, I give them away to the gendarmes each time I get a speeding ticket." In spite of his odd nature, in the realm of Bordeaux he has many accomplishments including restoring Canon-La Gaffeliere and Clos de l'Oratoire to their former glory by modernizing the wineries and vineyard operations. He also transformed the old Mondotte into the new La Mondotte which Bordeaux insiders now consider a "vin de garage", a winemaker's wine that reflects a sort of disregard for the traditional handling of wine in a particular terroir. Clos Marsalette is located in the commune of Martillac in the Pessac-Leognan appellation. The 13 acre vineyard is planted with red varietals: 35% Merlot, 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc and a small plot of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Specially selected rootstock, rigorous pruning, and green harvesting result in naturally low yields. The grapes are picked by hand and sorted in both the vineyard and the cellar. Fermentation takes place traditionally in small temperature-controlled wooden and concrete vats for the red wines. The wine is then aged in new oak barrels (60%) on the lees for 18 months before bottling.
