 The Capraia and Bozzagone areas – and their respective estates – were documented during the Middle Ages. Reference is made to them in 998. They were among the numerous assets of the Benedictines of Valdelsa. This included 3 "mansi" or farming plots, one of which was entrusted to a farmer who resides in Capraia. Since then oil and wine cultivation have endlessly continued, managed by illustrious noble Florentine families. Between the thirteenth and fourteenth century the three plots gave life to two distinct estates. Eventually the cellar was moved to Bozzagone. Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries a manor house was built, today completely restored with a number of residences of use to the farmers. The buildings which make up the two rural residences, beyond the renovations and numerous additions which have been carried out over time, keep traces of late medieval constructions in their ancient wall structures. The Tenuta di Capraia Farm is located in the center of Castellina in Chianti, an area highly suited to the production of the best red Tuscan wines. It incorporates 123 hectares (303 acres) with altitudes that range from 280 to 330 meters above sea level. The vine-planted land, all Classic Chianti, amounts to 45 hectares (111 acres). Another 10 hectares (24 acres) are reserved for cultivating olive trees. Today's feature, their reserve Chianti, is 100% Sangiovese and is aged in oak barrique for at least 15 months. |
