Vineyards cover an area of over 53,000 acres in the Alentejo appellation, producing an average of 23 million gallons of wine a year, mostly reds. The region enjoys a Mediterranean climate with exposure to strong sunlight, continuous high temperatures, dry weather and soil characteristics that favor vine growing and top quality production. Alentejo wines are unique and have a distinctive quality. Their secret lies in the use and combination of the wealth of native grape varieties. The secret is the sophisticated and demanding art of blending which the region has mastered to perfection. The blending allows the producer to get the best from each grape variety, which creates a more balanced and complex wine. Winemaker Jose Fonseca crafts this wine from the traditional grapes Trincadeira and Aragonez. The grapes were destemmed and fermented in small vats at a controlled temperature. Maceration was intense and lengthy giving this wine a great color. After fermentation the pulp was pressed and malolactic fermentation took place. The wine was aged in French and American oak barrels before bottling. |
