Founded in 2007, Bodega Teso La Monja represents a new era for the Eguren Family. Having arrived in the area of Toro 15 years ago with Numanthia Termes, the family of grape growers have now established and positioned their new wines, "Romanico, Almirez, Victorino, Alabaster and new born Teso La Monja on the podium of the most representative wines from our country" says Penín, the Spanish guide to the best wines in the country. According to the editorial team of the Penin Guide, "The winery's skill is such, that even in difficult vintages, they are able to position their wines as the most rated of the appellation, showing a path of territorial identification and understanding of vineyard. This serves as an example for new creators coming to Toro, seeking to capture the expressiveness and authenticity of the Tinta de Toro variety." The Eguren family has more than 100 hectares (247 acres) of vineyards in the DO Toro; un-grafted vineyards of up to 130 years old, in the towns of Valdefinjas, Toro and Villabuena del Puente. The Eguren brothers work with fresh soils – soils which are clay limestone, north facing and with pebbles on the surface area, looking for a longer vegetative cycle in order to create more elegant and fresh wines. The Eguren family’s objective is to create wines that evoke the versatility and strong identity of each of the vineyards that they own in both Rioja and Toro. Three generations, Guillermo (founder and 3rd), Marcos and Miguel (4th) and Eduardo Eguren (5th), have dedicated themselves to respect these vineyards and the fruit in order to create "new classics"; wines that endure over time, that combine fruit, power and structure with elegance, freshness and subtlety.
