Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas 2009
Rhone, France
"Dark, with terrific cut despite the heft of the roasted fig, baked plum, macerated black cherry and currant fruit, all pushed by sage, smoldering tobacco and singed apple wood notes. The muscular finish will need some cellaring to stretch out fully. Best from 2012 through 2020."

Saint Cosme - located north of the village of Gigondas - is the most ancient estate in the region. Lying on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa which very probably already had its own vineyard in 100 A.D., the estate's existence in 1416 is attested by a document mentioning the granting by Jean de Chalon, Price of Orange, of "land for the planting of vines on the Saint Cosme slopes." Henri and Claude Barruol's ancestors acquired it in 1570, and at the end of the sixteenth century built a splendid residence over existing cellars. The Barruol's took over the operation in 1957 and then in 1992, Louis, their son, took over the operation and is running it to this day. Louis expanded operations here beyond producing wine just from their vineyards into a negociant operation. Today's feature, their basic Gigondas, was produced using just fruit from the estate. They have 15 hectares (37 acres) of old vines (average 60 years old) with low yields. They produce only Gigondas wines from their vineyards which encircle the Chateau. The blend for this wine is 60% Grenache - 20% Syrah – 18% Mourvedre - 2% Cinsault. It was aged for twelve months : 70% in one to four year old barrels – 30% in concrete vats. It was bottled without filtration. |
