Piaggia Carmignano Riserva 2008
Tuscany, Italy
"The 2008 Carmignano Riserva Piaggia bursts from the glass with an exotic melange of tar, espresso, black cherries, spices and licorice. The 2008 isn't a huge Piaggia, at least not in relative terms, but rather it is a wine that impresses for its gorgeous inner perfume and striking overall balance. This is the first vintage to incorporate Cabernet Franc in the blend. I won’t be surprised if the 2008 improves with further bottle age. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. "

Piaggia is located right in the heart of Carmignano, a commune of 12,000 inhabitants in the province of Prato, part of the Italian region of Tuscany. It is located about 12 miles west of Florence. The total vineyard area is approximately 15 hectares (37 acres), divided between the area of S. Cristina a Mezzana and the municipality of Poggio a Caiano, both areas with a great potential for top quality wines. Mauro Vannucci started this winery in 1990 because of his great passion for great red wines, with the aim to produce some of the best wines in the Carmignano appellation. Since that time he has been joined in this venture by his daughter Silvia who is now a co-owner. In its almost 20 years of existence, Piaggia has managed to solidly establish its place among the great wineries of the classic Tuscan DOC of Carmignano, being called by Gambero Rosso "one of the best wineries in the region of Carmignano, rather, in Tuscany." Piaggia is a practicing organic winery. Integrated insect and disease control is followed. Organic fertilizers, copper and sulphur-based products are mainly used, but the vineyards see no insecticides or herbicides. The soil between the rows of vines is tilled. Today's feature, Carmignano Riserva Piaggia, the winery's standard-bearer, is the result of rigorous selection in an old vineyard near Poggetto, where the grapes make high quality wines that enhance the characteristics of the appellation to the fullest. The Riserva Piaggia is their modern interpretation of Carmignano, a wine that is made giving special attention to the finest detail: nothing is left to chance, either in the vineyard or in the cellar, because they believe their grapes deserve particular care and attention and because they want to offer the consumer a thrill that tells of the beauty of their vineyards and the aromas of their land. The wine is made from 70% Sangiovese and 10% each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The wine is transferred to French oak barriques after fermentation where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and remains for at least 18 months, during which time the wine is racked a few times to make it clearer and prepare it for bottling, which is done without subjecting the wine to any filtration or clarification processes, so as to keep all its organolectic properties intact. |
