Bodegas Y Vinedos Del Jalon Alto Las Pizarras Grenache 2005
Calatayud, Spain
"The 2005 Altos Las Pizarras takes things to a still higher level. A selection of the best lots was put into 100% new French oak to complete malolactic where it remained until recent bottling. Toasty oak, black fruits and espresso roast aromas are followed by a full-bodied wine with supple, sweet cherry and black fruit flavors with no hard edges. Put this beauty in the cellar for 3-5 years and drink it over the following 15."

Bodegas y Vinedos del Jalon S.A. commercializes the wines of the Cooperativa San Isidro, founded in 1965 as an association of several winegrowers in the town of Maluenda, Spain in the Calatayud appellation. Jalon was created to develop the grape growing, wine production and commercialization of wines, both young and crianzas, from the three bodegas that make up the cooperative. It was also founded to provide the dynamism and enterprise that was needed in the D.O.C. of Calatayud to strengthen its position in the market, and to be the driving force in developing new practices in viticulture and viniculture, while remaining faithful to the region's traditions. Jalon has almost 2,500 acres of vineyards, concentrated in the southern part of the Calatayud region. These vineyards are situated at altitudes of between 2,000 and 3,300 feet, with the higher sites dominated by Old-Vine Garnacha and the lower sites by Tempranillo. Of the more than 1,400 acres of Garnacha that they have in production, more than half are Vinas Viejas, planted more than 40 years ago. That includes today's featured wine, the Alto Las Pizarras Grenache. These low yielding vineyards are their "jewel in the crown", providing consistently outstanding fruit, year after year, and forming the basis for many of their best wines. |
