"The tannins are very fine, with rich fruitcake and smoky flavors. Red berry and black plums give a fruity character, along with delicious acidity. The wine is structured while still remaining very approachable."

Chateau Tronquoy Lalande takes its name from the family that owned the chateau in its formative years, the Tronquoy de Lalande family. After they sold the estate in 1859, it passed through several owners before becoming part of the well-known Casteja families holdings. Unfortunately, during this long period, it's wines were just average in quality. The estate needed attention desperately! Fortunately, Tronquoy Lalande was purchased by the Bouygues brothers in 2006 from the Casteja family. The Bouygues brothers earned their fortune in the telecommunications industry. For the Bouygues family, it was the perfect addition to their portfolio as they already owned the famed Chateau Montrose in St. Estephe. Both transactions took place in 2006. Chateau Tronquoy Lalande then benefited from a 10 million Euro renovation, which is a fortune when you consider the estate is a Cru Bourgeois and that the wines do not sell for that much money. A large portion of those funds were allocated to making Chateau Tronquoy Lalande a responsible, environmental, green estate. They get much of their power from the sun. To achieve this for their Left Bank estate, they placed 3,000 photovoltaic panels on their roofs. The construction took 3 years to complete. The wines of Chateau Tronquoy Lalande are produced by the same team that is responsible for the Bordeaux wine being made by the owners, the Bouygues brothers at their other Medoc estate, Chateau Montrose. Shortly after Chateau Tronquoy Lalande was purchased, they brought in one of the more popular and revered figures in Bordeaux out of retirement to manage both Chateau Montrose and Chateau Tronquoy Lalande, Jean Bernard Delmas. Delmas was director of Chateau Haut Brion for decades until he retired and was replaced by his son. The elder Jean Bernard Delmas is in charge of both Chateau Tronquoy Lalande and Chateau Montrose. The 30 hectare (74 acre) St. Estephe vineyard of Chateau Tronquoy Lalande is planted to 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. With a total of 18 planted hectares. The vines are on average, close to 25 years of age. The wine of Chateau Tronquoy Lalande is vinified in temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks. On average, the wine is aged in 25% new, French oak barrels. The 2009 blend is Merlot 51%, Cabernet Sauvignon 42% and Petit Verdot 7%. |
