Campo Eliseo Toro 2004
Toro, Spain

"The 2004 Campo Eliseo is opaque purple with a fragrant bouquet of wood smoke, spice box, mineral, black cherry and blackberry that jumps from the glass. This leads to a full-bodied, dense, opulent wine with layers of flavor and emerging complexity. The wine has firm underlying structure and should evolve effortlessly for 5-7 years. It will provide pleasure through 2035."

In 2000 two respected names in the wine world, Francois Lurton and Michel Rolland decided to combine their international winemaking experience of over 70 years in the vineyards of the world and produce a premium wine in the relatively unknown DO region of Toro, in north-west Spain, neighbor to Ribera del Duero. "What drew us to make wine together in Toro is that it ticks all the boxes of what defines a great terroir; poor soils that are well drained with extensive gravel deposits often four to five metres deep deposited by the nearby river and a clay subsoil which retains moisture." The fruit of their partnership is the rich and smooth Campo Eliseo Toro, made from 100% Tinta de Toro, a variant of the classic Spanish variety Tempranillo. Only 15,000 bottles are produced each year. Campo Eliseo in Spanish, Champs Elysee in French, it means "blessed fields." In Greek mythology it is the dwelling place of the blessed after death, a state of place of perfect bliss. The continental climate here is dry and hot with low rainfall and a dry wind. Daytime and nighttime temperatures vary widely. The vines are 40 years old. The fruit for this wine is sorted twice both before and after destemming. The resulting wine is aged for 18 months in new oak before bottling.
