Château Grand Mayne Saint Emilion 2009
Bordeaux, France

"Another St.-Emilion smart buy for consumers, Grand-Mayne has made a number of top wines (except for a short period when they had some TCA issues). This is a full-throttle effort filled with blueberry and black raspberry fruit, perhaps slightly more oak than oakaphobes would prefer, but a full-bodied, concentrated, ageworthy style. Sweet tannin, low acidity and ripe fruit suggest this well-made St.-Emilion should drink nicely for 15-20 years."

Mayne comes from the word "manor", which is used to mean "a fine house surrounded by a certain amount of land." This term definitely describes this magnificent property built between the end of the 16th and the early 17th centuries. The Laveau family, which included bankers and negociants, can be traced through the most of the long history of the chateau. Jean Nony, a wine negociant, purchased the property in 1934 right in the middle of the aftermath of the 1929 stock market crash. 40 years later Jean Pierre, his son, and Marie Francoise Nony took over the property. They undertook extensive renovations and invested in new technology to set Grand Mayne among the elite of Bordeaux wines. Today, Marie and her two sons Antoine and Damie run the estate. Being from Saint Emilion, this wine is primarily Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. It is normally aged for 16 months in barrels, 60% of which are new.
