Domaine Lafond Roc-Epine Chateauneuf du Pape 2010
Rhone, France

"A potentially great wine in the making, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Roc-Epine (made from an identical blend) possesses awesome concentration as well as a gorgeous nose of roasted Provencal herbs, lavender, blueberries, blackberries and cassis. With good acidity, sweet, well-integrated tannins and super concentration, it will be drinkable in 2-3 years, and should evolve for 15+ years thereafter. These two Chateauneuf du Papes are both highly recommended. Score range: 93-95"

Jean-Pierre Lafond's great-uncle, Pascal Odoyer, Governor of Tavel, became one of the pioneers in wine production in 1780 and his estate has been handed down from generation to generation. In 1948 Pascal Lafond's maternal grandfather, Valery Taulier, built the first private cellar in Tavel. Owner and wine merchant, he contributed enormously to the development of the Tavel appellation by creating close economic ties with the Burgundy wine merchants and with the principal Swiss importers. In 1970 Jean-Pierre Lafond, Valery Taulier's son-in-law, made the decision to build the actual cellar. Being passionately interested in horses, he took the name of a famous trotter, Roquepine, transformed the spelling to give it a more "Provencal" touch and hence the Lafond Roc-Epine Domain was born. In 1978, Pascal, Jean-Pierre Lafond's son, enters the scene and they decide to commercialize the Domain's wines. In 2001 Jean-Pierre and Pascal cross the Rhone River. The Domain now extended to the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation with the purchase of a vineyard of 8700 square metres or 2 acres so the production is small. Then in 2009 the decision is made; the entire property will become "organic". This means they gave up the use of pesticides, weed killers, and other chemical products. The only natural products remaining to protect the vines are sulphur and copper. The only treatments allowed are with products that can be washed away by rain and that do not penetrate into the plant. Today's feature is a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. Their rocky vineyard in Chateauneuf du Pape is pictured here.
