Domaine Galevan Chateauneuf du Pape 2010
Rhone, France
"The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the finest traditional cuvees I have tasted as well as a sleeper of the vintage. Made from 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre from 55-year-old vines, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a stunning perfume of creme de cassis, kirsch, incense, licorice and a vague notion of beef blood and roasted Provencal herbs. All of the fruit comes from vines planted in the northern end of the appellation. This exquisite, full-throttle Chateauneuf du Pape should drink well for 15 or more years. It is a major star of the vintage, and probably is reasonably priced as well."

Domaine Galévan is located in Courthezon, on the south-east side of Chateauneuf du Pape and was established in 1780.. Forty-nine of the estate's uninterrupted sixty hectares are planted with vines. All of the great grape varieties of the Rhone are grown: Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan for the reds. The vines have an average age of fifty five years. Some Grenache vines are up to 100 years old and are used in the superb cuvee St Georges. The winemaker Coralie Goumarre is the first woman in 9 generations to have taken the reins of the family estate. Her modern approach has brought new energy to the Domaine. She symbolizes a balance between knowledge and creative freedom. The soil and the grapes are treated with great respect, the estate is certified agriculture biologique since 2011. The names of the wines, the care taken over their labelling and the emblem placed on each of them stamped with elegance and femininity clearly indicate Coralie's personal style. Today's feature, her Chateauneuf-du-Pape, is made with 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre. It's aged in wood for 12-14 months. |
