Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc 2009
Rhone, France
"Superfresh, with blanched almond, green plum, yellow apple and verbena notes carried by almost brisk minerality. The finish is really bright and mouthwatering. There's rather stony precision and this still a touch tight. Begs for cellaring. Best from 2011 through 2020."

Clos des Papes was established in 1896 by Paul Avril, one of the group of vintners behind the creation of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Paul was the first of four generations at this winery in the village of Chateauneuf du Pape. His son Regis Avril delivered their wines to two French presidents, Charles de Gaulle and Georges Pompidou, as it has always been one of the best. Grandson Paul Avril started working at the domaine in 1963 with his father and then later for many years with his son, and current proprietor Paul-Vincent Avril. In his youth Paul-Vincent attended wine school in Burgundy. He went back to the domaine in 1988 where he set about making sure the wines had finesse and elegance, as he considers these the most important qualities in the wine. Today there are almost 80 acres (7 acres of white grapes) scattered around the town in 24 different parcels. One of these is near the Pope's castle and is surrounded by walls (clos); this is how the chateau got it's name. And in 2010 the vineyards were certified "agriculture biologique" (organic). Only three wines are produced here, the white and red Chateauneuf du Papes plus the Vin de Table "Petit Vin d´Avril" that is made from de-classified Chateauneuf du Pape. Paul-Vincent says that the secret behind the quality of their wines is very low yields. Today's featured Blanc is made up of roughly equal parts Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Clairette, Roussanne and Picpoul.
