Castiglion del Bosco Prima Pietra 2009
Tuscany, Italy
"Aromas of currants and raspberries with hints of licorice and mint. Full-bodied, with very well-integrated tannins and wonderful length. This is very, very classic. Goes on for minutes on the palate. Stunning third edition bottle of this Bordeaux blend from Massimo Ferragamo from his vineyards in Ripabella. Try in 2015."

While winemaking at Castiglion del Bosco has been a craft for centuries, until fairly recently the vineyards were cultivated solely for personal consumption by each family living on the Estate. Today, Castiglion del Bosco wines are consistently recognized for their excellence. As one of the founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, the organization that regulates and controls the quality of Brunello production, Castiglion del Bosco introduced the world to its exemplary vintages through the emergence of a commercial operation in the late 1950s. In 2004, acclaimed international Wine Master Nicolo D'Afflitto took command of winemaking at Castiglion del Bosco, along with locally trained enologist Cecilia Leoneschi. Under their careful direction, the Estate is yielding more modern Brunellos that are attracting critical acclaim plus Super Tuscans like today's feature, the Prima Pietra. Winemaking passion and top quality grapes combine in the Prima Pietra, a wine which exudes structure and elegance, produced from grapes grown in their Prima Pietra vineyards at Riparbella on the upper Tuscan coast. Close to the Bolgheri area, these vineyards are characterized by a particularly favorable climate, strongly influenced at the same time by the proximity of the sea and the adjacent mountains. The wine is made from 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. After primary fermentation malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels (50% of them new). Wood aging lasts for 18 months, with periodic barrel decanting being carried out by gravity alone. The wine spends at least six months in the bottle before release to the market. |
