Casa Lapostolle was founded by the Marnier Lapostolle family from France and the Rabat family from Chile in 1994. The principals in this company were Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle, her husband Cyril de Bournet and Don Jose Rabat Gorchs. Today, Casa Lapostolle is 100% owned by the Marnier-Lapostolle group. The Marnier Lapostolle family, founders and owners of the world-renowned liqueur Grand Marnier, are known for producing spirits and liqueurs, but the family has also been involved in winemaking for generations. Originally winegrowers in the Loire Valley, the family continues this vintner tradition today as owners of Chateau de Sancerre. In creating Lapostolle, the Marnier-Lapostolle family has pursued the same uncompromising approach to quality that made Grand Marnier a world-wide success. Their objective is as simple as it is ambitious: to create world-class wines using French expertise and the superb terroir of Chile. The whole venture started when Alexandra and Cyril had a "coup de Coeur" (loosely translated: love at first sight) for the Apalta vineyard in Colchagua. This is where the stunning Clos Apalta wines are from. Chilean climate is perfect for vine-growing. The vines have never been grafted. It was a revelation to discover that a good number of very old vines were still growing in the vineyards. These original cuttings were brought over from France in the last century and arrived in Chile before the dreaded phylloxera louse attacked the parent stock in Europe. As a result, the old vines in Chile are healthy and descended from great French lineage. This 2009 version of Casa Lapostolle's icon, the Clos Apalta, is comprised of 78% Carmenere; 19% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. The grapes were 100% hand de-stemmed in the Clos Apalta Winery so they can maintain complete control of the quality. They fill their French oak vats by gravity. Then nature did its work, allowing native yeasts to slowly ferment the must into wine. Macerations on the skins lasted for about 4-5 weeks to add color and complexity. They rack the young new wine straight into 100% new French oak barrels by gravity. Malolactic fermentation happens in barrels, where the wine stays for 24 months, ageing patiently. The wine is bottled by gravity without any treatment or filtration. |
