Dominus Napa Valley Red 2009
Napa Valley, California

"The 2009 Dominus has closed down quite a bit since I last tasted it. Today, all of the glorious fruit of the vintage is hiding behind a serious wall of tannin. The 2009 still possesses gorgeous inner perfume and plenty of sweetness, but little of the sexiness that will emerge over time. From time to time, the utter genius of the 2009 shows a glimpse of its potential. There is little doubt the 2009 will be a jewel once it awakens from what might very well be a long slumber. This is another wine that begs for patience. The 2009 is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. "

Historical records show that in 1836 George Yount, who gave his name to Yountville, California in the Napa Valley planted the first vines of the valley on the location of Napanook vineyard, before selling the land in 1850 to Charles Hopper. Since then, Napanook has had several owners, including Hugh La Rue, one of the pioneers in the use of rootstock and John Daniel, famous for the Inglenook Cask Selection. Christian Moueix (owner of Chateau Petrus in Bordeaux) fell in love with the valley and its wines while studying at U.C. Davis in 1968 and 1969. After many years of searching for the ideal vineyard location, in 1982 he entered into a joint venture with Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, John Daniel's two daughters. This was the birth of Dominus, and its first vintage was harvested in 1983. Since then, Christian Moueix has worked to restore the unique character of the original vineyard. He became full owner in 1995. Moueix's philosophy is very traditional. In order to produce great wine you need the best possible grapes. Therefore, he concentrates his efforts in the vineyard. The vines are meticulously manicured: crops thinned, grapes washed, leaves removed before harvest, and other labor-intensive activities. During each visit to California, Christian Moueix spends most of his time in the vineyard, not only because he loves it, but also to better understand the natural expression of each vintage. Dominus is the proprietary red wine produced at Napanook. Dominus has become known since its first release for its complexity and earthy character, which pay tribute to the Napanook terroir. Each vintage is unique with different varietal blends reflecting the vineyard and climate conditions of that particular year. The 2009 vintage is composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. The wine typically spends 18 months in oak before bottling.
