Chateau Guiraud Sauternes 2009
Bordeaux, France
"This is a bird of a different feather, with an exotic, vibrant aroma of toasted coconut, followed by an almond cream note that gives way to the core of green fig, papaya, Cavaillon melon and honey. There's stunning richness and mouthfeel, with the power to be one of the longer-lived wines of the vintage. Very impressive. Best from 2015 through 2040. Tasted twice, with consistent notes."

The "Noble House of Bayle" became Chateau Guiraud in 1766 when Pierre Guiraud, a Bordeaux merchant, purchased the property. Over the ensuing years two more generations of Guirauds owned the property followed by a number of others. During all this in 1855 Chateau Guiraud became a Premier Grand Cru de Sauternes and a legend was born. During a dinner in early 2006, Robert Peugeot, an industrialist, and three wine makers, Olivier Bernard of Domaine de Chevalier, Stephan Von Neipperg of Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere and Xavier Planty, the estate's director, decided to buy Guiraud. They signed a purchase contract on 20 July 2006 thereby uniting their shared passion for wine, gastronomy, nature and hunting. 27 miles south of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Garonne river, Chateau Guiraud extends over 316 acres. The whole estate is located in the village of Sauternes which is quite remarkable. Only Semillon (65%) and Sauvignon Blanc (35%) are planted at Guiraud. The average age of the vines is 35-40 years. Harvest is only done by hand picking in successive waves through the vineyard (2 to 7 selections), picking only the botrytised berries. Fermentation is done in new oak barrels over a period of three weeks to two months. Different batches are fermented until they reach their own equilibrium which depends upon their selection. Aging in barrels lasts 24 months. Chateau Guiraud Sauternes are so great that during the first decade of the new century they were in the Wine Spectator Top 100 wines of the year three times! And this new vintage is no different! |
