Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2007
Tuscany, Italy

"Best Montosoli since 1997. Aromas of plum jam and cherries follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a fruity finish. Pure fruit here. The purity to this wine is impressive. It is laser-guided in structure and fruit. Try in 2014."

Altesino is a leader in various, important innovations in the production of Sangiovese from Montalcino, causing it to stand out and become a reference point for the entire territory. Some of the positive contributions putting Montalcino on the world map are: the introduction of the "Cru" (Montosoli) concept in 1975, the first experiments with barriques in 1979, the production in 1977 of the first Grappa from a winery and the first Futures (purchasing wine before its release) for Brunello in 1985. The estate overall covers approximately 80 hectares (197 acres). The vineyards consist of 44 hectares (108 acres), sub-divided into the "crus" of Altesino, Macina, Castelnuovo dell'Abate (in the district of Velona), Pianezzine and Montosoli (the latter famous for the production of extremely elegant wines) like today's feature. Montosoli is in fact a vineyard of about 5 hectares (12 acres) to the north east of Montalcino at an altitude between 350 and 400 metres, whose grapes were fermented and aged separately for the first time after the 1975 harvest. The composition of the soil, the unique position and particular microclimate contribute to ageing the grapes which produce an extremely complex and elegant wine.
