Rolf Binder Hales Shiraz 2009
Barossa Valley, Australia
"Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Hales Shiraz has notes of warm blackberries and kirsch with a meaty/gamey undercurrent plus hints of damp earth, tobacco and black olives. Concentrated, fairly savory and medium to full-bodied in the mouth, it offers a medium-firm level of chewy tannins, refreshing acid and a long, earthy finish. Drink it now through 2016+."

Rolf Binder's mother Franziska and father, Rolf Heinrich, arrived in Australia from Europe (Austria and Hungary respectively) in 1950 as part of the large influx of post war immigration to Australia. As payment for their assistance to Australia, they worked with the South Australian railways for three years. During that time they met Elmore Schulz, a train driver and a grape grower in the Barossa Valley, and namesake to neighboring Barossa Valley Estate's E&E Shiraz. In 1953 while picking grapes in the Barossa, the couple met Langmeil Road winemakers Chris Vohrer and Wilhelm Abel. This chance meeting set the direction of their future. In 1954 they worked a vintage in this winery, and then purchased the business in 1955, renaming it "Veritas", taken from the Latin quote "In Vino Veritas" - in wine there is truth. Eventually son Rolf took over the reigns. The Rolf Binder name has an immense following in Australia as he has created a number of new brands and projects over the years. The Rolf Binder Hales Shiraz is 96% Barossa Shiraz with 3% Grenache and 3% Mataro. Most of the Shiraz is home grown from the Stephanie vineyard.
