M. Chapoutier Cotes du Rhone Belleruche 2009
Rhone, France
"Even better, and a real sleeper of the vintage, is the 2009 Cotes du Rhone Belleruche red. Dominated by 80% Grenache, with the rest Syrah and Mourvedre, this wine has a deep ruby/purple-tinged color to the rim, a big, spicy, peppery, kirsch-scented nose, and medium-bodied, juicy flavors, with intriguing minerality and loads of fruit and texture. This is a very serious Cotes du Rhone that should drink nicely for 3-4 years. (To Chapoutier’s credit, this is made completely from contracted biodynamically farmed vineyards, as opposed to buying fermented juice from growers.)"

Michel and Marc Chapoutier represent the seventh generation of their family wine business originally based solely in the Rhone. Marc runs the business end and Michel the vineyards and winemaking operations. Since Michel took over the wine side of the business from his father Max, he has made many changes that have improved the quality of the wines in all their operations. Many of his changes were in the vineyard where he believes the wine's quality is made. He has lowered yields of the vines, thus concentrating flavors and adding complexity. And he has moved to a biodynamic vineyard management program, trying to eliminate chemical fertilizers and pesticides. And he has changed the way oak is used in the ageing process by shortening the periods in barrel but using more new oak. Chapoutier's Belleruche Cotes du Rhone is comprised of mainly Grenache and Syrah. The vineyards of the red Cotes du Rhone "Belleruche" are located in 4 departments (Drome, Vaucluse, Gard and Ardeche) on different soils giving the "Belleruche" an extraordinary richness and complexity. And for those of you who noticed the Braille on all of Chapoutier's labels here's the story: This trademark pays tribute to Maurice Monier de La Sizeranne, owner of the plot of the Hermitage, and the inventor of the first version of abbreviated Braille. And it also expresses the desire to reach out to and include all people with sight-impairments who are lovers of good wines. |
