 Since Roman times the southern slope of the Saint-Emilion has been hallowed ground for winegrowers. Nestled among the vines of this area is the fountain of Chateau Fonplegade. This fountain is steeped in history. More than just the source of this winery's name (it literally means "fountain of plenty"), for millennia it has quenched the thirst of travelers and offered sustenance to the grape vines in the driest years. In 1852, Jean-Pierre Beylot recognized the potential of this area and constructed the Chateau and expanded the estate to it's current size of 44 acres. At the 1867 Paris Exposition Fonplegade's wine was honored with a gold medal. Many famous families owned this estate through the years but it did start to lose some of it's original luster. Starting in 2004, new life was infused into the operation by Stephen and Denise Adams (who also own Pomerol's Chateau L'Enclos and Napa's organically farmed White Cottage Winery). They have completely renovated the winery and the cellar plus have returned the land to it's organic roots. It is now "hand farmed" without the use of any chemicals. They have lowered yields by 30%, concentrating flavors and complexity in the fruit. And they have brought in world-renowned Oenologist Michel Rolland. All of this work is paying off in the final product as you can see from the reviews of their wine. The wine is composed of 91% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. It spends 18 to 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels before release. |
