 Caymus Vineyards was founded in 1972 by Charles Wagner and his wife and is located in the Napa Valley. Both of them come from families with ties to the wine industry but they decided to get directly involved in winemaking. This winery has always been known for it's rich, lush Cabernet Sauvignon. Most of their grapes come from their own 65 acre property but they do purchase some grapes from other local vineyards. The first vintage of Special Selection Cabernet was made for 1975 by their then winemaker Randy Dunn. Randy made the wine for Charlie for ten years. When he decided to make his own wine, Charlie's son Chuck, who was an avid pupil of Randy's, took over winemaking duties. Special Selection has become a California institution and the Wagner's have continued to make sure it remains an icon by using only the best fruit for this wine and have even gone so far as to not make the wine in some vintages that they felt were inferior.
