The site that is now Hewitt Vineyard was first planted to vines in 1880, when Dennis Hanrahan bought the parcel bordering Gustave Niebaum's Inglenook (now Rubicon Estate). The Hanrahan Ranch survived Prohibition by shipping grapes east to home winemakers. In 1962, William A. Hewitt, head of Deere & Company (John Deere), bought the vineyard and replanted it to Cabernet Sauvignon with the help of famed wine master Andre Tchelistcheff. They chose to make a single-vineyard wine from Hewitt Vineyard because its fruit has such singular character that it deserves full expression rather than blending it into an ensemble with wines from other vineyards. With more than three decades of Napa Valley winemaking experience, Tom Rinaldi is proud to be the first winemaker to craft a single-vineyard expression of Hewitt Vineyard Estate. "It's an exceptional piece of land," says Rinaldi. "The first time I set foot on it, the hair on the back of my neck stood up. I consider it a privilege to draw from more than 100 years of observation and experience that have accumulated since vines were first planted at this historic site. My goal in the winery is to highlight the unique way this special vineyard expresses Cabernet Sauvignon." He harvests the grapes at peak maturity, ferments them for optimal extraction, ages them slowly in new French oak and bottles without filtration. The inaugural release of Hewitt Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was the 2001 vintage. It's a fleshy, well-integrated and subtle wine. "We already have plenty of in-your-face wines," says Rinaldi. "I want a more polite wine, one that is neither aggressive nor abrasive. You get tired of all the undisciplined, over-the-top Cabernets. Ours is a complex, intellectual wine, one that requires a little effort to uncover and fully appreciate."
