Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 2009
Tuscany, Italy
"This is fantastic. Intense and super long on the palate. It's insanely complex yet subtle with so much going on, with a beautiful balance and tension. It is full and powerful with a big juicy character that goes on for minutes. Muscular yet covered with pretty fruit. Hard not to drink. But better in 2016."

The Incisa Della Rocchetta family were important figures in the medieval and Renaissance history of Northern Italy. In the 1920s, when he was still a student at Pisa, Mario Rocchetta dreamed of creating a quality wine. His ideal was represented by the great Bordeaux wines. He drew inspiration for his experiments with grafts of Bordeaux vine cuttings from his great grandfather Leopold's catalogs of his own observations almost a century earlier. The family came into possession of lands in the Bolgheri area when Mario married Clarice Della Gherardesca. From it's first vintage over 40 years ago, Mario put the family seal on the label of Sassicaia to represent the love of the Incisas for their lands. The decision to plant Cabernet Sauvignon on the San Guido estate is due to the similarity he noted between this part of Tuscany and Graves in Bordeaux. In fact the name Graves refers to the stony terrain of the area in Bordeaux just as the term "Sassicaia" does in Tuscany. A wine composed mainly of Cabernet was a wild departure in those days from the normal Sangiovese based Tuscan wines and was met with much skepticism. Mario realized that the Cabernet vines needed time to mature so the wine was only drunk at the estate until the first vintage was released publicly in 1968. It immediately received high acclaim in the wine world. Eventually the term "Super Tuscan" was coined to describe this wine and others to follow. Mario's son Nicolo now runs the estate. Sassicaia is generally 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. Following fermentation the wine is aged for 24 months in one third new French Oak barriques. It is one of the most sought after bottles of wine by collectors everywhere!
