It was in 1853 that Baron Rothschild from England bought Brane-Mouton and renamed it Mouton Rothschild. But it was Baron Philippe in the early 1920's who really started this ambition to make the finest Bordeaux and in 1973 he succeeded in reclassifying Mouton as a First Growth. Today, his daughter Baroness Philippine and her children carry on the tradition of this great chateau. Their 207 acres at Pauillac are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 48 years. All harvesting is done by hand. Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild, the second wine of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, has been produced since 1993. It is generally made from a selection of the youngest vines of the illustrious First Growth and harvested, vinified and bottled with the same painstaking care. Everything is done to ensure that the wine expresses the elegance and depth of a great Pauillac. The number of bottles produced, no more than a few thousand cases, and the proportions of the different grape varieties vary according to the characteristics of each vintage.
