Perrin & Fils Cotes du Rhone Villages 2009
Rhone, France
"The 2009 Perrin et Fils Cotes du Rhone-Villages ratchets up the intensity level. A blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, it exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue, black cherry, black currant, lavender, pepper and Provencal herb characteristics, medium body, pure fruit, silky tannins and no hard edges. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years. This is exactly what I am talking about when I say a product must “over deliver.”"

The history of Chateau Beaucastel and the Perrin Family goes all the way back to 1549 when Pierre de Beaucastel bought the original plot of land and started growing grapes. Over the years there were a number of owners. In 1909 Pierre Tramier bought the property and Beaucastel then passed to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, a scientist who considerably increased the vineyard holdings. His efforts were continued by Jacques Perrin until 1978. Today the torch is carried by Jean Pierre and Francois, sons of Jacques. The fifth generation of Perrins, Marc, Pierre, Thomas and Matthieu, are already learning how to make great wines here from Jean Pierre and Francois who now run the operation. Famille Perrin "aspires to establish its reputation specializing in vineyard-designated communal wines from the Southern Rhone. And as the company's head vineyard scout, Pierre Perrin must unearth diamonds in the rough. His job is to add to their growing portfolio of small, quality wine estates in France's Southern Rhone Valley. Today's feature is their Cotes-du-Rhone Village. This wine is produced by the Perrin family, using the same viticultural and wine-making techniques used at Chateau de Beaucastel. Just 20% of the Cotes-du-Rhone vineyard is entitled to add the word "Villages" after the words "Cotes-du-Rhone". These are the best vineyard sites. The winemaking is done at the Perrin & Fils winery located at Chateau du Grand Prébois in Orange. It is made up of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah.
