 Andrea Cortonesi became a farmer by deliberate personal choice. Although he comes from an agricultural family he could have chosen a different path until, in 1986 he purchased the Uccelliera farm and vineyards. He was in time to catch only the last, setting rays of the "old-style" farming, when one heard little of Brunello. Then everything changed. He says that when he began to work the land that was now his, he realized that he was perhaps seeking to live a relationship with that soil that went beyond simple business principles. As Brunello rose in importance he made a name for Uccelliera which has become a favorite for many. Casato 1 is a new project being headed by Andrea. He also has a restaurant in Siena with the same name. The Voliero is made from one of the most prestigious vineyards on the northern side of Montalcino. As such, it provides a fascinating contrast to Cortonesi’s wines from Uccelliera, which of course come from the southern part of the zone. There is no question as to what he has done with the raw materials from this new property; the score speaks for itself.
